1982: Massimo Osti, Tela Stella and the birth of the badge
The story begins in 1982. Osti started with a stiff, two-tone truck tarpaulin — Tela Stella — which he "distressed" using a heavy stone wash. On these first jackets, he stitched a removable badge featuring the wind rose: the Compass Patch that would become the icon of Stone Island.
The DNA: research, experimentation, garment-dyeing
Stone Island is defined by its research into fibers/fabrics and experimentation. The brand popularized garment-dyeing to produce deep, sometimes irregular colors with a unique feel — the foundation of its visual language from the very beginning.
The cult fabrics that changed everything
-
Mussola Gommata: cotton muslin laminated to a PU film → windproof/water-repellent + saturated colors via garment-dyeing.
-
David-TC / Light-TC: "star-shaped" polyester dyed at high temperature (~130°C) → dry hand-feel, structure, anti-drop.
-
Nylon Metal (iridescent), Reflective, Membrana…: a library of technical materials that has become the house's signature.
The badge in culture: from terraces to luxury collabs
The Compass Patch established itself as a sign of community: first on the terraces and in UK/Italian football culture, then in global street culture. Collaborations (Supreme, Nike, New Balance, and Dior in 2024) have strengthened the badge’s visibility and linked technique & luxury.
Living heritage: the Selected Works ‘982–’024 exhibition
In 2024, Stone Island presented its largest US retrospective in Los Angeles, during Frieze LA: 42 archive pieces, a focus on Shadow Project, Reflective, Pure Metal, etc. Proof that history continues to fuel the present.
