🏔️ The history of the Pyrenex brand: from down to the catwalks

Pyrenex is the story of unique expertise born at the foot of the French Pyrenees. Renowned for its goose or duck down-filled jackets, the brand has become in just a few decades a benchmark for technical apparel and high-end winter fashion. Let’s dive into the fascinating history of this iconic fashion house.

📍 The origins: Saint-Sever, 1859

Everything began in 1859 in Saint-Sever, in the Landes region, when Abel Crabos started collecting feathers and down from local farms. At the time, these raw materials were used for bedding.

The tradition was passed down from generation to generation, and the small artisanal company slowly transformed into an industrial player, still firmly rooted in the Southwest.

🦆 Down, the heart of Pyrenex expertise

The true strength of Pyrenex lies in its mastery of natural down:

  • Sourced from animals raised in the open air in the Pyrenees or Aquitaine

  • Sorted, washed, and sterilized on-site in the Saint-Sever workshops

  • Used for products with very high insulating and thermoregulating power

This rare expertise makes Pyrenex one of the last European manufacturers to master the entire down chain, from processing to garment making.

❄️ The 60s–70s: from pillows to technical clothing

In the 1960s, under the leadership of René Crabos, the brand diversified its activities. Pyrenex began producing:

  • sleeping bags

  • down jackets

  • sportswear and mountain clothing

The brand became an equipment manufacturer of choice for high-mountain expeditions and winter sports enthusiasts.

đź‘— Pyrenex and fashion

In the 2000s, Pyrenex took a bet on urban fashion, alongside its outdoor ranges:

  • Collaboration with designers (e.g., Alexandre Mattiussi, creator of AMI)

  • Creation of "Heritage" collections blending aesthetics and technicality

  • Success of the Spoutnic, Authentic Shiny, and Annecy models

Pyrenex down jackets then became essential pieces for a chic and functional winter wardrobe.

🧵 Ethical & local manufacturing

True to its roots, Pyrenex continues to produce in France:

  • Workshop in Saint-Sever, with over 150 skilled employees

  • Priority given to short supply chains

  • OEKO-TEX® certification for its down

A guarantee of quality, traceability, and durability.

✨ A brand at the top

Today, Pyrenex is an internationally recognized high-end brand, present in the finest boutiques and always prized for:

  • Its technical products (jackets, parkas, down jackets)

  • Its commitment to an authentic and sustainable style

  • Its unique DNA, between artisanal tradition and textile innovation
